Description:

WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT

Dallas Morning News formally known as The Dallas Morning News seeks an experienced reporter for its Washington Bureau. This correspondent will focus on the intersection of government and business, along with Texas’ huge and growing congressional delegation.

Versatility is key, along with curiosity and an affinity for keeping federal officials accountable and helping Texans understand how government impacts the state’s employers and workers, environment and future.

Experience covering Congress or state government is a must.

Candidates should already have expertise in some of the issues a government/business reporter writing for a Texas audience might wrestle with, and a demonstrated capacity to go deep on complicated stuff in a hurry, and make it interesting and relevant.

Over the years that list has included trade and tariffs, telecom, energy policy, deficits, EB5 visas, daylight savings, airline safety, food safety, workplace safety, fracking, influence peddling, water wars, health care, transportation, defense contracts, campaign finance, gun control, demographic shifts and climate change.

This reporter is also an integral part of campaign coverage, with a premium on thematic stories on Texas congressional elections.

You’ll have a natural sense of urgency when news breaks, and a capacity to turn smart topical stories in a hurry. You’ll also go deep on medium- and longer-term enterprise, so the ability to juggle multiple assignments is a must. We write stories for our North Texas audience and want our readers to see themselves in our political coverage from Washington.

You’ll have more ideas than you could possibly deliver, and those you do focus on will be well reported and worth reading.

What else makes a strong candidate:

Dallas Morning News recognizes that different perspectives and backgrounds drive the innovation and ideas that are essential to our business success.  To that end, we are committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff. Diversity, equity and inclusion will be embedded in the hiring, promotion and development of our employees, in reaching diverse audiences with our content, and in choosing the companies with which we do business.
