The Grants Pass Daily Courier is hiring a sports copy editor to design and write headlines for three to four sports pages per edition in addition to pitching in when possible on other pages in the newspaper.
We still print baseball box scores here on a daily basis, from Opening Day to the last game of the World Series. But local comes first, and our centerpieces frequently focus on high school sports.
Our website has a hard paywall, which means nonsubscribers get zero free stories a month. We're not wasting resources on podcasts, video or newsletters. You won't have to meet Twitter quotas.
This is not your typical small-town newspaper being hollowed out by a corporate owner. No one was furloughed during the pandemic and no one's pay was reduced.
Our newsroom is a healthy mix of young journalists and longtime veterans. No other media source -- print, online or broadcast -- comes close to covering our local market at the level we do, and our readers respond with loyalty to our newspaper.
Our circulation is 10,000, we publish five days a week, and we punch above our weight. This year, the Daily Courier won more Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association awards than any other daily in the state, and we've won 70 ONPA awards over the last three years. You read that correctly: 70 statewide awards over the last three years.
We are better positioned than most of our peers. Our company is debt-free and has been owned by the same Grants Pass family for 124 years (that's not a typo). We outsource nothing to other states or countries. We don't use faraway design centers, no editing hubs, no remote printing sites. Humans pick up the phone here when a customer service call comes in. You'll bump into our press operators in the break room. It's all done in-house.
Yes, the pay is entry-level, but there's one financial offset to factor in: The company pays 100% of your health insurance premiums (no paycheck deductions) under one of our three insurance options.
The New York Times’ Travel section named the Rogue River, which is the lifeblood of our circulation area and fuels the local tourism industry during the summer months, one of its 52 Places to Visit in 2018. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound here in uncrowded settings. We have a vibrant downtown and are less than an hour from world-class theater in Ashland.
We're an afternoon paper and the presses roll at 11:15 a.m., so the shift is typically 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
Applicants should have editing and pagination experience, either collegiate or professional, and be well-versed in AP style. To apply, send a resume, a cover letter and links to your work to firstname.lastname@example.org. Very important: Use “Copy editor” as your email subject. Please email any questions you may have to the same address.
