Description:

The Chattanooga Times Free Press is looking for an assistant news editor to help coach a cohesive, talented and enthusiastic group of reporters, with an eye toward bringing individuals and the group to the next level.

This means:

  • Working with reporters to master the basics, challenge assumptions, reward innovation and build a glide path for success.

  • Collaborating with other departments to make sure the best stories are getting on the front page and homepage, with the best visuals and storytelling devices.

  • Mastering our analytics platform and using its insights to channel our storytelling to our many audiences, from social media and newsletters to the Region, Business and Life sections.

  • Managing robust partnerships with traditional wire services and a growing roster of outside outlets to bring the best available content to our readers.

  • Editing copy carefully, striving for consistent style, thoroughgoing ethics and the highest possible degree of accuracy.

The job requires a minimum of three years of experience at a daily newspaper in reporting and editing positions, a great work ethic, a team mindset and lots of creativity. You should be able to work collaboratively, balancing the demands of print and digital platforms, editing stories quickly for the web and then turning attention to more enterprising pieces for the weekend and beyond.

You must be able to coach reporters to stay on top of the news, handle data, spot trends and hold the powerful to account with enterprise and investigative coverage.

The Times Free Press is part of a financially solid, privately owned media company with a newsroom that values mission-driven journalism and community service.  The newspaper has been named the best in the state by the Tennessee Press Association for eight of the past 10 years, most recently for 2025. Plus, the city is a phenomenal place to live. It is one of the top outdoor destinations in the country and has become a magnet for major industries over the past decade, with internet at speeds you can only imagine if you don't live here. There is a thriving downtown along the Tennessee River, and the city is within a two-hour drive to Atlanta and Nashville.
