Editorial page editor sought to lead opinion pages at The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette in Indiana’s second largest city. Our daily morning newspaper, locally owned since 1863, is committed to well-researched, cogent editorials on local and state issues. This position oversees the production of six daily editorial pages and five half-page opeds per week, plus a stand-alone Sunday section that includes a Books page. The editorial board – composed of the company president, publisher, and full-time editorial page writer in addition to the editorial page editor – meets regularly to generate ideas, establish and develop editorial positions. Our retiring editorial page editor has welcomed and cultivated local writers of various viewpoints who contribute oped columns and letters to the editor.
The successful candidate will have at least five years in news, including some in opinion writing, be a good interviewer and be tenacious in pursuit of government transparency. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred with experience reporting on local government, education, health and economic development. Responsibilities include researching and analyzing local and statewide issues and writing editorials on the positions advocated by the editorial board; being aware of breaking news, policy and political issues at the local and state levels; building and developing local and state officials and community sources; attending public meetings and hearings on key issues; launching and facilitating a community advisory board to increase the perspectives on our pages; using social media to engage with readers; and editing local submissions, syndicated columns and editorial cartoons for publication. No design skills necessary.
Please submit your resume with a cover letter explaining your interest and qualifications for this position along with four to six recent writing samples to firstname.lastname@example.org by Tuesday, Oct. 26. The Journal Gazette provides healthcare benefits for full-time employees, a 401K retirement plan, paid time-off, and competitive pay.
