The Taos News is looking for a reporter to join its award-winning editorial team at a 9,000 circulation, family-owned newspaper located in beautiful Taos, New Mexico. The Taos News was voted the best weekly newspaper in the United States by the National Newspaper Association in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021.

We are seeking a smart and energetic journalist with a well-rounded skill set, someone who can write clean, accurate and well-balanced news stories as well as in-depth features that bring our most important stories to life. Strong writing skills, interviewing abilities and journalistic ethics are essential. You should know how to write a strong, punchy headline that draws the eye and a compelling lede that keeps readers reading. While we employ a full-time staff photographer who will help to illustrate your stories, reporters must also have the ability to shoot and edit their own photos as needed.

Similarly, while we also have a copyeditor on our staff, we require reporters to maintain current knowledge of Associated Press style guidelines.

We are looking for someone who can take on a variety of news topics to. start, but a successful hire will quickly settle into specific beats as they get to know our historic and culturally diverse community. We want reporters to work independently, while also enjoying the process of working with a talented team. We have collaborated with other news organizations in the past, including Solutions Journalism Network and High Country News. You will have the opportunity to have your work picked up by our sister paper, The Santa Fe New Mexican, the second-largest newspaper in the state.

Our readers care deeply about what happens here, from the latest court cases, the effects of climate change on our environment, corruption in our local government, the performance of our local schools and the health of our growing economy.
