The Casper Star-Tribune, Wyoming’s statewide newspaper and best daily for four years running, is seeking a talented journalist with strong writing and copy-editing skills to join our team. Learn to hone your craft in a fun newsroom that prioritizes mentorship.
In this hybrid role, you’ll be working both as a general assignment reporter, with a focus on breaking news, and on the Star-Tribune’s copy desk. On weekends, you’ll be guiding our papers through production while keeping an eye out for stories that develop.
As a reporter, you will have the opportunity to cover a wide variety of stories and get experience hopping on breaking news. As a copy editor, you will give stories a second edit, facilitate the design process and make final judgments on page proofs.
The ideal candidate will have excellent time-management and organizational skills, including the ability to work under deadline pressure. You’ll need to be able to take charge and be decisive. Flexibility is critical. We want someone who can turn a breaking news story on a fire one day and write a feature the next. The ability to cover sports is a big plus.
Strong familiarity with AP Style and grammar is essential to this job, as is the ability to write news stories quickly and cleanly.
We take pride in being our state’s top media voice. In January, we were named the best daily newspaper in Wyoming for the sixth time in the last seven years, and we take pride in routinely breaking the state’s biggest stories. Our reporters and photographers regularly take home awards at state, regional and national competitions, and we have a reputation for developing journalists, many of whom have gone on to major publications across the country.
Outside the newsroom, Wyoming offers endless outdoor opportunities. We’re at the base of a beautiful mountain range where you can hike in the summer and ski in the winter. Camping and world-class fishing are just a short drive out of town. Casper boasts the big-city offerings of restaurants, shopping, microbreweries and the arts while still giving you plenty of room to breathe. And if you’re missing the big city itself, Denver is down the interstate.
The Casper Star-Tribune is a Lee Enterprises news organization. We offer a strong benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, paid holidays and a generous paid time off program. We are an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity in our newsroom and encourage candidates from underrepresented communities to apply.
