The Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a higher education reporter to produce exclusive enterprise and watchdog work focusing on Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College.

You will be required to go out and find the best stories that illustrate not only student life, but the “town and gown” relationship, the relationship between lawmakers and the schools, and major research developments. Building relationships and sources is key.

By way of example, you will be expected to:

The higher education reporter will be expected to work with other news and sports reporters when needed. Enterprise work of statewide interest is encouraged. A background in education reporting is preferred but not required. A deep curiosity about education trends is a must.

This reporter is expected to break exclusive news. The person will identify, produce and post stories, photos and video quickly and accurately across multiple platforms, including social media. This reporter may be asked to handle general assignments and breaking new when needed.

Tallahassee — population ~200,000 people — is the capital of Florida. It has a vibrant arts district (Railroad Square) and a thriving business sector. The universities and state government are our biggest drivers.



This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law. Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and drug screen.
