The Boulder Reporting Lab (BRL) is a new nonprofit, non-partisan local news organization in Boulder, Colorado. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, trustworthy, local-first reporting and information that helps people in and around Boulder make sense of issues and events happening around them, navigate their lives and build community. We’re the only independent, digital, not-for-profit newsroom in our city and county. Our journalism is data-driven, solutions-focused and service-oriented. We’re deeply committed to covering the issues of greatest community pride and concern, including climate change, housing, health and the local economy. BRL’s founder previously co-founded a national news startup that won many of journalism’s most prestigious awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. We’ve lined up funding for our launch and will be looking to grow exponentially over the next few years.
Managing Editor Job Description
We’re seeking an enterprising Managing Editor to join and help lead our team. As Managing Editor, you’ll work closely with the Founder/Publisher of BRL to help launch and build a sustainable newsroom that informs, engages and empowers Boulder locals to navigate local life and set the agenda for their city.
This is a rare, exciting opportunity to join a pioneering local news startup from day one and shape its editorial vision in a city clamoring for an alternative to the resource-depleted local newspaper. We aim to create the Boulder Reporting Lab with our community, not just for it. We think of ourselves as an ever-evolving permanent experiment (hence our name), and we’re seeking a digitally savvy newsroom leader who is excited and motivated by this challenge. Your work building BRL would not only contribute to Boulder’s future, but to the industry’s understanding of what sustainable local nonprofit journalism can look like.
There is no single ideal candidate for this role. Our small team has walked unique paths and brings a diverse set of skills. Still, this is not an entry-level position, and we’re looking for someone with relevant skills and strengths. You probably have at least five years of experience in editing roles. This could be in nonprofit or for-profit journalism, in major newsrooms or startups, at national, regional, local or hyperlocal levels. If you’ve never worked in a newsroom but have adjacent editing and leadership experience and a vision for this position, we also encourage you to apply. We’re looking for someone who believes in the power of local journalism to improve communities; who understands the financial realities facing the local news business and wants to be part of building something new; who brings innovative ideas and can thrive in a startup environment.
Given our community mission, this position will be located in Boulder. We’ll allow remote work temporarily to accomodate a transition period. Boulder is a beautiful city at the base of the Rocky Mountains. It’s also full of complexities. The issues facing the city are a microcosm of complicated and overlapping issues swirling around the Mountain West — climate change impacts and solutions, lack of affordable housing, inequity, local development battles, a changing workforce and economy and more. These issues are ripe for hyperlocal, in-depth, fact-based, solutions-focused, nonpartisan reporting that challenges conventions.
The Boulder Reporting Lab is a proud member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers and the Colorado News Collaborative (COLab). This position is salaried and full-time, and will be integral in engaging our community on the biggest local stories that matter in our city. We have secured two years of launch funding. The starting salary range is around $65,000 - $75,000, with plenty of opportunity for growth. Please note: This is an approximate range and will depend on various factors.
A strong portfolio of articles you have lead-edited that demonstrate an ability to tell complex, human-centered stories that are revelatory and explain issues clearly and concisely.
Versatility for editing across formats — from in-depth and data-driven stories to compelling profiles, explainers and short news briefs, curated newsletter information and social media posts.
An understanding of the revenue challenges facing local news businesses and a keen interest in incorporating audience-based thinking into your editorial work.
An interest in solutions journalism.
A commitment to building an inclusive and thoughtful work environment.
We’d be really excited if you also have
Knowledge of and/or demonstrated interest in Boulder-specific issues, including local climate challenges, housing and development, racial equity and how these issues intersect.
Newsroom leadership experience.
Experience editing award-winning journalism.
Experience hiring and managing reporters and freelancers, including assigning stories and handling breaking news events.
Comfort with analyzing datasets.
Data visualization chops.
Proficiency with Wordpress and Mailchimp.
Knack for aesthetic design.

Interested in bending the rules of traditional journalism. Often what our community needs is not a piece of perfectly constructed journalism, but rather timely, clearly presented information that helps them navigate their lives — and that’s an important part of our mission, too.
What your day-to-day work might look like
Lead-edit a feature story or two and news briefs.
Create and publish original stories as well as our AM newsletter, BRL Today, in our website’s content management system.
Help manage our system for curating and publishing vital community information.
Publish content across our social media channels.
Assign stories and breaking news coverage as needed.
Write stories, including news briefs and breaking news, as needed.
Manage our editorial calendar.
Run our daily news meeting.
Work with colleagues on brainstorming membership and fundraising campaigns as needed, as well as occasional events.
Help manage reporters and interns.
