States Newsroom is seeking a Western National Editor to help oversee the editorial tone and content of a group of hard-hitting award-winning state news organizations based in western states to ensure quality and consistency. If you have experience as an editor, are knowledgeable and passionate about issues unique to the western US, and you’ve always wanted to support state capital coverage in multiple states, this is the job for you.

As Western National Editor, you will work closely with States Newsroom’s management and editorial team to maintain editorial standards, coverage consistency, and commentary breadth at affiliated outlets. You will supervise and support state editors in their work as team leaders and mentors to their reporters. You will provide direct editorial and editing support to state outlets as needed and work closely with other national editors to improve and sustain the States Newsroom network.

The Western National Editor will meet virtually with western state editors in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oregon each week (at least). You will also participate in regular in-person meetings of all States Newsroom editors, usually in Washington, DC, and more infrequent gatherings of the national editorial team and regional staff. Some travel to state outlets and our offices in Washington D.C. and Chapel Hill, NC will also be required.

This position requires a college degree, extensive reporting and editing experience, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. We are looking for the proven ability to manage newsrooms and complex reporting projects. Flexibility, a love for news, and an entrepreneurial spirit are essential qualities.
