Outdoors/sports reporter

Description:

If you have a talent and passion for writing about skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, trail running, paddling, climbing and the outdoor recreation industry, we are looking for you. The Vail Daily, located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, seeks a versatile reporter to cover the outdoors, recreation, and the world-class athletes who call the Vail Valley home. That includes covering the exploits of Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin and other world-class athletes who live here and train here. Some preps sports duties are also included in this position.

Living and working in the mountains is a lifestyle, not a job, and we’re looking for an adventurous spirit with a love for the outdoors and mountain towns. This is not a position for beginners or someone looking to subsidize their powder habit. We need a mature, ambitious storyteller who can turn a phrase, shoot an image, edit a video and tweet — all on deadline with snow boots on. Full disclosure: It snows here — a lot if we're lucky.

Interested candidates should have a working knowledge of the various sports and outdoor pursuits that make this valley a destination the world over.

County Reporter

Description:

The Vail Daily is looking for an experienced reporter who can deliver top-level work covering elected officials in Eagle County and local issues. This reporter would be focused on short-term enterprise stories, current local issues and trends and longer-term investigative reporting. The ideal candidate will have superior reporting skills and the ability to provide timely explanatory pieces, quick-turn analysis off breaking news and compelling profiles of key people currently in the news. We’re looking for someone who knows how to dissect budgets, dig into development and land-use applications and write compelling stories that extract all that information and present it to readers so they can understand the issues and the stakes involved. The No. 1 priority on this job is holding those in positions of power accountable for the decisions they make when it comes to spending public money and evaluating various development and land-use applications.

Basically, we want someone who has the ability to do it all. Note: This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone with three-plus years experience working in a daily journalism environment.

We're also looking for an adventurous spirit with a love for the mountain lifestyle. We work hard and we play hard here. You’ve got to be a planner who knows how to strategize and execute a wide variety of content — from in-depth features and profiles to short Q&As and lists of things to do— and be able to pivot quickly when news happens. This job is all about details — plotting coverage, hitting deadlines, doing your homework on various proposals in play in front of elected officials, and crafting stories that avoid the jargon of government reporting, and driving social media engagement.

Here at the Vail Daily, we punch above our weight, producing award-winning, impactful journalism that captures the spirit of this remarkable place and strengthens the bonds of our communities.

Full disclosure: It snows here — a lot, if we're lucky.
