We are in search of a Senior Editor to join the Coffee or Die Magazine editorial staff.
The ideal Senior Editor is an experienced multimedia journalist and editor who is ready to join a growing team that covers news and human interest stories about the military, veterans, and first responders. This role will be an important voice in the editorial direction of Coffee or Die Magazine, and will require strong leadership and reporting experience.
Duties will include reporting and writing daily news as well as longform features (which may include going on assignment to austere and/or dangerous locales); supervising, editing, and mentoring assigned staff writers and freelance writers; sourcing art and imagery as needed, and building stories in the content management system. Additional responsibilities may include assisting with graphic design, social media publishing, and video production.
This position is remote, and may require irregular hours.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Report and write news and stories about first responders specifically, as well as the military and veterans as needed.
Supervise, edit, and mentor assigned staff writers.
Curate and manage pool of freelance writers.
Plan and manage syndicated and/or evergreen content operations as needed.
Collaborate with the editorial team daily.
Assist with social media and e-mail distribution as needed.
Assist with graphic design/art requirements and video production as needed.
Experienced journalist that is comfortable producing daily news.
Experienced editor that is comfortable with AP style guidelines.
Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.
Proficient with Google Docs, Google Sheets, MS Word, MS Excel, WordPress, and Google Analytics.
Proficient on major social media platforms.
3 years experience working with digital content and/or social media strategy.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, creative writing, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
Has demonstrated success as an editor at at least one other publication.
Familiarity with, or experience reporting on the law enforcement, fire, or paramedic communities.
Ability to recognize stories with high potential for both a digital and print audience.
In addition to the minimum qualifications
Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite.
Proficient with Sony camera systems, and experienced as both a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker.
Experience going on assignment to cover dynamic and rapidly evolving news.
Proficient copy editor and story editor.
An eye for headlines that work on digital platforms.
Working knowledge of SEO concepts.
5 years experience working in a fast-paced news environment.
Excellent organizational skills; comfortable working with a team that is geographically dispersed.
Graduate degree in journalism, creative writing, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
Has demonstrated success as a senior editor at at least one other publication.
Prior experience working in the law enforcement, fire, or paramedic career fields; experience reporting on police, protests, riots, and natural disasters.
