Sactown, Sacramento's largest city magazine, is looking for a qualified staff reporter who will report and write stories, fact-check articles, generate story ideas and perform light editing. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of print journalism experience, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. Must be a self-starter and very detail-oriented. Familiarity with Sacramento is preferred, but not necessary. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume and 3-4 story clips.
Before launching Sactown in 2006, the magazine's founders/co-editors spent 10 years in NYC as staff writers for Money magazine, InStyle and SmartMoney, and as freelance writers for New York magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Metropolis and elsewhere.
Sactown has won dozens of awards for its editorial, design, illustration and photography, including the Western Publishing Association award for Best City Magazine, the Folio Award for Best Cover. In 2019, it earned the National City & Regional Magazine Award for Best Profile for our piece on author William T. Vollmann. In 2020, Sactown won the National City & Regional Magazine Award for Column Excellence.
The magazine takes Covid-19 safety issues very seriously, and moved to work-from-home status before it was even required to do so in March, 2020. The Sactown team, which is 100% vaccinated, will only return to the office only when it becomes fully safe to do so, and when it does, it will be a hybrid office-home work schedule (Tuesdays through Thursdays at the office, and Mondays and Fridays working remotely). All new staffers *must* be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and be able to provide verification of such. Our new office is located in midtown Sacramento, amidst many of the city’s best restaurants and shops.
