Kansas City magazine has an opening for an Associate Editor. This position will be responsible for collaborating directly with the magazine’s Editor-In-Chief to generate fresh and engaging print and digital content for the city’s magazine.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Associate Editor and Editor-in-Chief work together to produce the monthly magazine, which includes everything from serious news stories to events picks to soft-focus personality profiles. The Associate Editor will write, edit copy and work with freelancers in the magazine departments they manage. They will also help manage our editorial interns. We’re looking for someone who will generate story ideas and efficiently sift through the noise of social media posts and press releases to key in on the coolest, most interesting and most important subjects in the city.
-We’re looking for a confident, skillful writer with a compelling voice who also has the ability to infuse the magazine’s tone into copy from freelancers and interns.
-We’re looking for someone with the reporting skills to spot a great story, track down a source and ask the right questions.
-We’re looking for someone to manage Sway, our lifestyle section. The right candidate will have an eye for design and trends, spotting the next breakout maker or artist. They will work this beat, building connections in the local design and architecture communities.
-We’re also looking for someone who can direct the upload of our monthly print publication. We want someone who knows, or will learn, the best practices for SEO to help ensure that we squeeze the most web traffic we can out of our print content. We also expect pitches for web-only content opportunities that will have great ROI.
-We’d love someone who can contribute excellent profiles and listings to our monthly events section.
-Ability to pitch in on our hard news and food sections as needed.
-Manage editorial interns to ensure they learn while also successfully completing stories and projects
