J. The Jewish News of Northern California has an immediate opening for a part-time staff writer.
You will work with an experienced team of writers and editors who are committed to excellent journalism and to serving the needs of the Jewish community of the San Francisco Bay Area. The position is 2-3 days per week, and you must live in the Bay Area.
Staff writers produce a wide range of stories in both news and culture, from 200-word briefs to 3,000-word feature articles. We are a digital-first media outlet and we also publish a print issue every other Friday. That means you will often have tight deadlines on breaking news, along with the time to do in-depth investigative or enterprise reporting. One day you might be reporting on a swastika painted on the side of a school building, another day you might be talking to Israeli scientists about a new cure for a deadly disease, and another day you might be interviewing the author of a new book on a Jewish topic.
The ideal candidate might be a recent college graduate with a major in journalism and/or experience on a campus publication, or an experienced journalist looking for part-time work. You must be adept at social media and knowledgeable about, or at least conversant with, Jewish issues, including Israel and the Middle East. Above all, you must be a careful, resourceful reporter with a great flair for writing. We win multiple national Jewish journalism awards every year, and our standards are high.
J. has a storied history dating back to 1895. We have always been independent, and are a nonprofit.
Our office is in downtown San Francisco, and we have a very collegial newsroom that we hope to return to in the fall.
Send your resume, 4-5 clips, and a cover letter to firstname.lastname@example.org. Let us know why you want this job, and why you think you’d be a good fit.
