Description:
Breaking Defense, the world’s largest news organization dedicated to defense, seeks a new addition to our superb editorial team, focused on our newsletter and social media platforms. This is a great growth opportunity for a highly prestigious international media brand.
The Assistant Editor, Newsletters and Social Media role centers around curation and presentation of our industry-leading news content for our VIP readers. This position manages our newsletters and executes our social media strategy, with additional responsibilities on our home page and special projects.
The job requires interfacing with many departments of the Breaking Defense team, serving as a topic-expert liaison between editorial and our audience development campaign management and business development teams. In addition to being the daily operational lead on our newsletter and social media outlets, the Assistant Editor may be asked to help with editing copy or assisting with writing stories if needed.
This is an editorial role, not a business, marketing or purely social media play. The successful candidate will have some experience in journalism and the journalistic ethos, paired with an awareness and appreciation of the modern media dynamic.
Ideal attributes: 1-2+ years experience minimum. Awareness of defense issues and enthusiasm for the national security milieu is ideal, but the ability to synthesize stories into concise and direct summaries, while working quickly and collaboratively, are the true essentials. The role requires high levels of focus and energy, tech savviness, willingness to work the details, and the ability to learn and adapt in a collaborative team environment.
Breaking Defense is defined by its culture of open communication, collaboration, responsibility and respect, with solid values and a remarkable track record of success. We’re looking for someone with the right skills, orientation and mindset to add to our editorial team for long-lasting success. Someone who can take a story or video, ask the right questions to understand it quickly, and use initiative to identify audience interest to optimize presentation for the most important defense decision-makers in the world.
Key Responsibilities :
Editing, managing and developing newsletters. Curating, scheduling and sending our fleet of newsletters, while crafting subject lines that draw attention to key stories. The candidate will have to be able to analyze a story, understand why it’s important and summarize that in direct, concise terms for our audience. Experience with newsletter systems is a bonus but not a requirement.
Writing specialized synopses and social posts for editorial content. With media increasingly fractured, it takes more to break through to an audience. We need someone who understands our stories to be able to pull out and present the point for our audience with concise, compelling appeal, and then manage posting to various channels via the Hootsuite platform.
Curating audience-facing platforms. Curating the YouTube channel, podcast channels, internal video channels and specialized microsite pages for news content presentation. Includes simple management of platform metrics reports. As part of managing the YouTube channel, part of those responsibilities will involve loading in videos with descriptions and crafting thumbnails.
Editorial Analytics. Collaborate with the audience team to monitor the impact editorial curation on email and social media platforms, using insights to grow engagement by our readers.
Editing and reporting. Occasionally editing stories from the reporting team as part of the Breaking Defense editor pool. Occasionally filling in reporting gaps with brief stories, in coordination with our beat reporters.
Award nominations. At Breaking Defense, we want our reporters to be recognized for their best work. Part of this role will be identifying and submitting nomination applications for high-credibility journalism awards.
