CryptoCulture is seeking a seasoned journalist ready to take the helm of an online news start-up based in Texas that generates content and distributes information about the new era of money and its impact on our society. Specifically, we’re a business-news lifestyle publication interested in telling human stories behind the rise of crypto currency. Think NPR’s "How I Built This" meets New York Times Magazine profiles.
We’re looking for a detail-minded self-starter to take the chief leadership position on the editorial side of our publication, who can help us get started by publishing articles, while recruiting and building a team of freelancers. This editor would be given the editorial freedom to choose what stories to pursue, and how to cover them. A passion for storytelling is required; expertise in crypto currency is not.
The leader for this position should be adept at helping produce high-impact enterprise journalism while growing a swath of readers from the ground up.
The site is being launched by Alejandro Medina and Marc Gagni, two San Antonio, Texas-based entrepreneurs who believe in an independent press and the critical role it plays in a democratic society. They’ve brought on San Antonio news veteran Ben Olivo as a consultant.
Duties and responsibilities:
» Build a team of freelance reporters, photographers, audience engagement experts, etc.
» Develop the talents of staffers by offering constructive criticism of their work; guiding them through the reporting process; and editing their work with excellent command of grammar, usage and AP style
» Build a culture and ethical philosophy that’s on par with the highest journalistic standards in the U.S.
» Conceptualize and assign stories aimed at growing a digital audience—through avid readers of the website, social media followers, and newsletter subscribers.
» Demonstrate a high comfort level with analyzing and interpreting metrics and uses them to inform coverage decisions in real-time and in the long-term.
» Must have experience producing high-quality enterprise journalism either as a reporter or editor at a newspaper, news website or magazine
» Experience with building a news start-up is preferred, but not required
» Bachelor’s degree or five years in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred
» Demonstrate success working in a deadline-driven environment
» Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks
» Ability to speak a second language like Spanish is a plus
» Valid driver’s license and a working vehicle are required for the position
