The Austin American-Statesman is seeking a Higher Education Reporter to cover the flagship universities of Texas, particularly the University of Texas at Austin, one of the largest public universities in the nation and among the largest employers in Central Texas, as well as other institutions in Central Texas.

Coverage of UT would include internationally recognized research, campus friction over issues of race and social justice, the UT System regents and management of a multibillion-dollar endowment. UT, Texas A&M University and other major Texas schools are seen as linchpins in supplying the educated workforce needed to continue to fuel the economic boom. The higher education reporter would write breaking news, as well as in-depth and watchdog enterprise on issues such as tuition, academic success and student safety trends.

This reporter would use state open records laws to hold institution leaders accountable and develop hard-hitting investigations. This reporter would work well with others to produce the best coverage of higher education topics that overlap with coverage by other newsroom teams, including business, public safety, state politics and sports. This person would be comfortable delivering news to our diverse audience where they are, especially online and on various social media platforms, and would use available tools to help drive traffic to their work.

The ideal candidate would have at least five years of reporting experience and a track record of producing strong, accountability journalism.
