About the position:
The Senior Communications Manager for JFF’s Policy Unit presents an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional in communications with an avid interest in public policy and a proven track record of reaching policymaker and influencer audiences. Funded by the Policy Unit, this position reports into the Policy Associate Director, and also is a member of the JFF Communications Team, comprising events and marketing communications experts. This role inhabits the best of both worlds as a member of a robust policy team driving JFF’s work to advance nonpartisan, practice-informed public policy while also working with other communications colleagues on producing top-flight deliverables. In this position, you will drive the Policy Unit communications strategy with a data driven, digital first, “outside in” approach and advocate development of bold, high-impact content
What you'll do:
You develop and lead the execution of the Policy Unit’s strategic communications plan, including identification and tracking of key performance indicators aligned to unit strategy, funded projects, and JFF’s relevant priorities, to ensure JFF reaches priority policy audiences in timely and relevant ways to deepen our reputation and influence.
On an regular basis, you analyze audience reach and communications preferences to guide development of communications content and refinement of strategies
Collaborate with members of the Policy Unit in the conceptualization and execution of deliverables and communications strategy in new funded proposals
Earned, Social, Owned Media and Events
You develop and execute social media and marketing communications campaigns to promote content and thought leadership of Policy Unit. This includes creating content regularly for social media channels (e.g. Twitter, LinkedIn), developing toolkits for use of JFF staff and field partners to promote Policy Unit content over social media and their networks, and producing email blasts to policy e-newsletter subscribers
Partner with the Policy Unit and JFF Events Team to produce highly effective and engaging virtual and physical events and activities that raise awareness and engagement with JFF’s policy content and with JFF policy subject matter experts.
You cultivate and activate relationships with news media (popular and trade) and with bloggers, conference/webinar hosts, podcasters, and e-newsletters, and collaborate with JFF’s PR firm, in order to widen coverage of Policy Unit content and thought leadership and to position Policy Unit members as subject matter experts to encourage interview requests.
You advise Policy Unit members on news angles, key messages, and types of content to pursue in the development of content to ensure relevant responsiveness to national policy discussions and priority policy audiences.
You package existing policy content to leverage real-time opportunities for impact in policy discussions and to align with needs and interests of particular policy audiences
Liaison and Relationship Management
Serve as an ambassador and broker between the Policy Unit and JFF Communications Team to ensure each group understands, collaborates on, and executes the operations and process involved to produce high quality, high impact deliverables.
You keep the Policy Unit current on key aspects of JFF communications goals and content.
As domain manager, you navigate competing streams of communications work in the Policy Unit and set appropriate expectations among Unit and Communications colleagues.
You lead the marketing communications project management process, including workflow and budget, to ensure on-time, on-budget production of Policy Unit’s content by editors and designers on JFF’s Communications Team.
Growth and Learning Mindset
As a key communications partner at JFF, you will continue to share pertinent marketing and communications tools, developments, and best practices with the Policy Unit and Communications Teams.
You will develop understanding of the Policy Unit’s emerging and responsive approach to change in the market/field.
You will continually increase your domain expertise and content knowledge of your Unit’s work to more fully inform your communications decisions and guidance.
Who you are:
You are a communications professional with at least seven years of relevant experience including marketing, persuasive and news writing, social media, video and podcasting, and public relations.
You are a consumer of politics, news, and social media who keeps a pulse on what education and economic issues are tracking.
You have a working knowledge of federal or state policy environments.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and embracing ambiguity.
You excel as a collaborator and an individual contributor.
You have experience with project management systems; with Workfront a plus.
You possess high energy and passion for JFF’s mission; ability to apply JFF’s core?values to all areas of your work.
