Job Summary

This position will focus on the proactive dissemination and communication of information and announcements from the District Attorney's Office and other area law enforcement. This position shall be responsible for management of media inquiries and the coordination of appropriate responses.  It is essential that all verbal and written responses are appropriate, concise, gramatically correct, and representative of information the District Attorney authorizes for release. This position is responsible for managing the District Attorney's website, CrimeWatch portal, and social media platforms  and assuring critical need-to-know information is released to the public in a timely manner.  

The media specialist will work directly with the District Attorney on press conferences, speaking engagements and other events involving the presence and/or input of the District Attorney.  Additionally, the media specialist is involved in community programs which promote public safety and wellbeing of residents of Lancaster County.  That work includes collaboration with schools, organizations, and agencies with consideration of the duties and mission of the District Attorney's Office.

Reporting Relationships

This position reports directly to the District Attorney. This position has no direct reports reporting to it.

Essential Job Functions

Coordinate and execute dissemination of all publicly released information from the District Attorney's Office; 

Review, coordinate, and respond to media requests to include verbal and/or written responses and assuring that only appropriate information is disseminated;

Write press releases and talking points for press events and other public forums involving the District Attorney;

Ensure all written material is grammatically sound and factually accurate;

Host press events with the District Attorney and other law enforcement partners as presenters;

Produce multimedia material for online release and display at press events;

Collaborate with the District Attorney, senior staff members and line attorneys on stories, releases and projects;

Maintain the District Attorney's CrimeWatch platform, producing and disseminating content and coordinating the assignment of tips received from the public;

Oversee and produce daily content for District Attorney social media platforms, to include Facebook, Twitter and YouTube;  

Maintain public trust and confidence in the District Attorney's Office;

Maintain confidentiality standards of the District Attorney's Office at all times; 

Assist Lancaster county law enforcement agencies, when necessary, with release of information and tasks related to CrimeWatch and/or social media;

Participate in outreach programs and panels with community partners; Promote public safety through collaboration with criminal justice stakeholders and community partners.

Other Specific Tasks or Duties

Ability to speak publicly, professionally and confidently;

Analyze DA objectives for the Media Specialist position and provide recommendations to further influence achievement of the objectives or positively influence public perception;

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the community, outside agencies, and media;

Other duties as designated by the District Attorney

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelors Degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or similar field is required with a minimum of two years relevant experience or any combination of equivalent education and experience.

Experience in mass media/news reporting

Experience at managing websites and communicating via social media

Proficiency with computers and programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Proficiency with the English language both verbally and in written content including grammar and composition, written information must be understandable

Must be able to plan and organize and have excellent record keeping

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and familiarity with the criminal justice system, police operations, local, state, federal law, and local, state and federal court operations preferred;

Knowledge of mass media operations;

Firm understanding of the District Attorney's role and mission;

Ability to develop and maintain professional and productive relationships with community and media

Aptitude and command of English language, grammar and sentence structure;

Writing composition skills;

Ability to speak publically, professionally, clearly and with confidence;

Ability to maintain composure in high pressure, difficult situations;

Ability to work independently and productively;

Ability to perform on a deadline;

Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers;

Photography and videography skills;

Must be able to work off typical work hours as necessary

Required Licenses/Certifications/Clearances

Background check to include but not limited to PA Drivers License, criminal, drug screeing, education, prior employment

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

Must be able to travel as needed to different locations other than the DA's Office

Must be able to operate typical office equipment and computers

This position requires both sitting for long lengths of time and movement to alternate work areas or to office equipment
