Candidates for this position are being recruited for the 2021-22 fiscal year; the position will begin July 1, 2021.

To create and publish engaging content related to the district and all of its schools. The position will focus on communicating with staff, students, parents, the entire district, and the community through various media while also acting as a relations liaison for local media and other governments. 

Essential Functions

  1. Respond to internal and external customers, as it relates to job, in a prompt, efficient, and friendly manner. 
  2. Produce bi-monthly newsletter featuring both informative and entertaining content at the direction of district leadership.
  3. Collaborate with district leadership to produce annual district report featuring detailed information along with several “feature” portions. 
  4. Produce feature stories for local news media by working directly with stakeholders (employees, students, parents, etc.) and regularly attending school events (sports, arts, etc.).
  5. Produce informative stories for local news media focused on items local news fails to cover (i.e. new policies, staff shortages, raises, big projects, etc.).
  6. Produce quarterly podcast under the direction of district leadership.
  7. Create engaging content for district and school social media accounts.
  8. Collaborate with district leadership to create a more engaging website by focusing on what makes KUSD – students, staff, special projects, community initiatives, etc.
  9. Craft quality internal communication on major items of importance (COVID updates, upcoming legislation, etc.) at the direction of district leadership. 
  10. Increase the communication capacity of the district by assisting people who have important information but struggle to relate that information to schools, the district, and the community.
  11. Maintain knowledge of and adhere to all policies, regulations and rules. 
  12. Perform related duties as assigned in a safe and prudent manner.

  1. Excellent grammar, proofreading, and verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, graphics or photo imaging, video creation and editing, and publishing software; proficiency in all other programs and web-based platforms relative to communicating information in an effective and engaging manner.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain interpersonal business relationships to facilitate work activities.
  4. Ability to develop and maintain sources of information.
  5. Ability to self-direct, identify potential stories and follow through on ideas.
  6. Ability to design and develop marketing materials.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

The incumbent’s work environment will vary on a daily basis depending upon current projects.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time position. Employee may need to work irregular and extended hours.  

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s ore more advanced degree in English, communications, journalism or similar field plus three to five years work experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or similar field, or a similar combination of education and experience that would enable the incumbent to perform the essential job functions.

Preferred Education, Experience and Licensing

  1. Experience in producing podcasts
  2. Experience in website development

Required Certifications/Licenses

Valid driver’s license

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain a Fingerprint Clearance Card with an IVP number through the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
