Art Director for Cowboys & Indians magazine
For nearly 30 years, Cowboys & Indians magazine has covered the American West with award-winning stories and visuals that reach an international readership of more than 850,000.
We are seeking a talented and resourceful art director to join our team in Dallas and execute the visual direction and established aesthetic of the magazine. The ideal candidate for this position would work in our office under editorial directors on a Monday-through-Friday schedule.
Candidates for the position must possess advanced design skills including pagination, typography, photo manipulation, and working knowledge of style sheets. The position also requires a high level of understanding of Adobe CC programs including InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, and Illustrator (see complete technical requirements below). Digital production is part of the job. Candidates must be comfortable designing editorial and advertising pieces for both print and web, with knowledge of IAB standard digital ad guidelines.
We’re a relatively small team producing eight editions of C&I a year, so we’re looking for someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle art direction and design duties for all the magazine’s departments. C&I’s sister publication, the twice-yearly Western & English Today, is also in the art director’s realm of design duties.
Most important, the ideal candidate for this role should be able to quickly study the evolution of the magazine’s design and apply those principles and approaches to the look of the publication going forward. They should also come equipped with knowledge about the magazine’s editorial focus, and possess ideas and resources for art research and resources that support our editorial approach.
In addition to the in-office duties, our art director takes a leading role in guiding original photo and fashion shoots in any given year.
- Expert level of Adobe CC including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat
- High level of typeface management and usage
- Working understanding of Microsoft Word
- High understanding of color theory, design principles and theory
- Up-to-date understanding of design trends and applications
- Knowledge of image and color correction
- AA or BA in Graphic Design with 4-6 years of experience
- Availability to work on-site in C&I’s Dallas office
