The Press Democrat, winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news, is seeking a reporter to cover diverse communities in Northern California’s Sonoma County and the issues confronting our diverse population. This is a critical new role in our Newsroom, one that tackles the full spectrum of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice matters and trends.
The ideal candidate is adept at data analysis and offers the necessary storytelling skills to cast a revelatory spotlight on the people, issues and story lines shaping our region -- from communities of color to immigrants, Indigenous people, our LGBTQ community, people with disabilities and marginalized populations. You must be inquisitive, fearless and determined to tell the rich stories of diversity and cultural awareness that too often have been overlooked in Wine Country.
In addition to covering the Latino community, Sonoma County’s largest population of color, you will be responsible for reporting on socioeconomic challenges that exist in our community and the effectiveness of elected officials, public governments and private foundations charged with addressing inequities. This beat also will celebrate the cultural and familial “moments of life” that define our diverse community. This reporter also will take a lead role in covering demographic changes revealed by the 2020 Census. This is a daily reporting beat, with ample opportunities for enterprise and public accountability reporting. Fluency in Spanish is preferred. Experience in solutions and accountability journalism is a plus.

We also center our efforts around collaboration and working together – on everything from sharing sources and thoughtful conversations about diversity and inclusion to occasionally tag-teaming with others on important trend and investigative stories. We are better together, allowing us to deliver high-impact content to our readers.
We offer an opportunity to grow your career at our award-winning family of publications, with opportunities to contribute to our daily newspaper, award-winning digital site and regional magazine. All have been recognized as among the best in their respective categories, one of the reasons our news products enjoy some of the highest readership rates in California.
We are passionate about our work and excited about the opportunities and future for local journalism in a digital age.
