Description:

Times Picayune | The Advocate is committed to recruiting, developing, and promoting a diverse workforce while providing unique opportunities and career paths for our employees.

Are you a creative digital storyteller who knows how to spot a neighborhood trend and write a great story? Do you have a knack for uncovering the community issues that people care about and using data to bring context to those issues? This might be the perfect job for you: Data Reporter at The Times-Picayune | The Advocate.

We’re looking for an enterprising digital journalist who knows how to interpret local government data, particularly on crime and real estate, to uncover what’s happening neighborhood by neighborhood and help our readers understand it.

This reporter will uncover neighborhood data trends in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, turning daily stories aimed primarily at our growing digital audience on nola.com and theadvocate.com. You don’t have to be a back-end data wrangler, but you should be a storyteller who loves digging into numbers. We’ll bring the data -- you bring the story ideas, writing experience and digital skills.

This is a one-year, grant-funded position, with the possibility of extending the position after the grant ends.

Responsibilities include:

Work independently, meet deadlines and collaborate across newsrooms in three different cities.

Find, pitch and report original data stories, while also collaborating with other reporters on ideas for neighborhood data-driven stories.

Identify new data sources to mine for neighborhood stories.

Help launch, write and curate a regular weekly newsletter around neighborhood stories and data.

Dig into community life in south Louisiana to understand the unique social, political and cultural climate that influences everything from home-buying trends to traffic tickets.

Preference will be given to someone with experience using digital data visualization tools such as Datawrapper or Infogram is preferred but not required.

This position can be based in New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Lafayette. We’re committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply. If you’re interested, please provide a resume, a cover letter and links to at least six online samples of your work.

The Times-Picayune | The Advocate is Louisiana’s largest news organization, serving the cities of Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette, and their surrounding regions, with a news and editorial staff of approximately 105 reporters, editors, designers, photographers and digital journalists.
