The Watertown Daily Times has an immediate reporter opening in its St. Lawrence County bureau. The Times is seeking applications from curious and intuitive journalists, people who aren’t afraid to go out and meet others, people who are genuinely interested in getting to know a new place they can grow to call home.
Our bureau is located in Massena, in northern St. Lawrence County along the U.S.-Canadian border, but the chosen candidate has the option to write from home after reporting in the community.
This candidate must be able to work independently. Our system allows for instant communication and transmission of breaking news stories to editors in a timely manner.
The ideal candidate for this job will have strong communication skills, work well under deadline pressure and have the versatility and intellectual curiosity necessary to juggle a variety of tasks. The paper is situated in a competitive media market, so those with a strong sense of news urgency will stand out.
In this role, the reporter will be responsible for covering the village of Potsdam, a high-energy college town in St. Lawrence County, as well as the county Board of Legislators. While this reporter will have stories regularly to cover off their beat, we encourage our staff to pursue story ideas they wish to cover. Our newsroom is a collaborative environment, and all ideas are welcome. Our editors expect reporters to go beyond meeting coverage and pursue in-depth reporting that will keep our readers informed. There’s a lot happening the the village and county right now.
