SUMMARY    

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at Michigan State University seeks applicants for a Communications Manager to direct and produce articles, communication strategies, digital strategies, including web/social media and public relation efforts for the Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) and the dynamic marketing office team of MarCom. The college is looking for an energetic candidate who has the ability to multi-task and prioritize and manage priorities; who has exceptional skills in digital music production, and is also a strong writer who can execute efficiently and effectively in print communication and creative digital efforts.

 

AAAS envisions a dynamic communication and marketing strategy that engages and contributes to Black cultural production as a means of community building. The successful candidate will have experience and demonstrated expertise in Black aesthetics and design principles. It is imperative that the digital experience of AAAS not only communicates the departments’ vision, mission, and values but makes them come alive to current and new audiences.

 

This position reports directly to the Chair in the Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) and the Marketing Director in the College.

 

ABOUT THE AFRICAN AMERICAN AND AFRICAN STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Mission

AAAS at MSU is a Black Studies Department that embraces, without apology, Black feminisms, Black Gender Studies, and Black Sexuality Studies. Our mission is to provide an integrative education that engages conditions of Blackness locally and transnationally. We have three organizing inquiries that motivate and sustain our work: 1) Black Cultures and Institutions, 2) Black Girlhood Studies, and 3) Black Speculative Ecologies. We specialize in community and cultural works, cultivating radical imagination, and collective revolutionary knowledge production. As a unit we are committed to making concrete connections between our scholarship, pedagogy, and social justice.

 

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

As a core college with a focus on a broad liberal arts education, the College of Arts and Letters educates actors, artists, designers, filmmakers, linguists, philosophers, poets, teachers, translators, writers, and much more while exposing students to the major cultural issues facing a global society. The successful candidate will play an important role in communicating the vision, mission, and values of the African American and African Studies Department while simultaneously amplifying the mission of the College of Arts and Letters to its constituents.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The successful candidate will develop and pursue story ideas and photos/multimedia in order to produce news and feature stories; edit and compose news releases and articles and produce related materials in order to provide informational support for events and programs; write and compose materials in order to produce publications for targeted AAAS and CAL diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) audiences; coordinate all processes for publication and distribution, providing public relations and marketing communications support; implement technological changes and new communications mechanisms as it relates to digital, mobile, and multimedia platforms; interview subjects and prepare scripts in order to produce communication and marketing collateral; develop ideas in conjunction with AAAS faculty and administrators; and work with the Marketing Office staff in order to produce marketing materials targeted to specific AAAS and CAL DEI audiences.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

The job requires: knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Communications, English, African American and African Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Public Relations, or Marketing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing, and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, multimedia, and creative services; graphic design; web and digital strategies; production; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; working with diverse communities and individual leaders within diverse communities and developing effective working relationships with members of various and diverse communities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least three years working in a journalism, public relations, publishing, multimedia, or communications field. Experience in developing and implementing content strategies in the arts and humanities particularly those in the African American and African Studies discipline. Exceptional oral communication skills and the ability to lead projects from story idea to execution. Excellent knowledge of creative writing and working with digital content. Outstanding verbal and written skills, with the ability to demonstrate these skills with internal and external stakeholders, the dean’s office, College faculty, and university administrators. The ability to proactively seek story ideas from faculty, students, and alumni for multiple publications (digital and print). The skillfulness to identify and produce news and information through news releases, social media updates, calendars, e-newsletters, multimedia pieces, and other forms of print or electronic media – assuring accuracy, readability, appealing presentation, and proper style, formatting, and accessibility in all instances. The competence and experience to create and shape multimedia content for social media and web properties.
