Story Hunter is a longform journalism start-up based in Brooklyn. We’re looking for a part-time research assistant to help find and develop stories. The ideal candidate is a recent college graduate looking to gain a first-hand look at how investigative feature articles are written and reported.
A top-notch candidate has the following traits.
— Curious! You get distracted reading about the variety and weirdness of life — e.g. Wikipedia wormholes, a tattered copy of Newsweek from 1992, a book about steam heating on Grandma’s shelf, etc.
— Unafraid to knock on doors and make cold calls
— Detail oriented with a “turn every page” ethos
— Able do legal research on PACER and at local courts
— Familiar with Lexis Nexis and Newspapers.com
— A sleuth on social media
— Has access to a car, with gas to be reimbursed (a plus but not required)
— Fluent in a foreign language, particularly Spanish (a plus but not required)
— Lives in New York (a plus but not required)
Compensation + Future Role
Pay is $25/hour, with roughly 10 hours a week to start. A full-time job will emerge for the right candidate. In addition to gaining valuable experience, you will also receive mentoring and help with your journalism career moving forward.
