The Texas Observer seeks a full-time digital editor to oversee our thriving online presence.
We are a 66-year-old award-winning Texas institution that specializes in investigative longform journalism, daily news analysis, and must-read coverage of state politics and culture.
We’re looking for an editor with a minimum of 3 years of experience working in daily online journalism, who will take our independent, accountability-driven journalism to the next level. You must have a passion for investigative reporting, comfort with collaborations, and an abiding interest in Observer beats, including mass incarceration and civil rights, Indigenous affairs, the environment, public health, immigration, and politics.
Produce and upload stories to the Observer’s online content management system.
Manage the Observer’s social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; work with reporters and editors to produce social copy and SEO headlines.
Produce monthly analytics reports to help us understand our audience and how they are reading and accessing Observer stories.
Attract and acquire new audiences and deepen engagement with them.
Manage the Observer’s newsletter program and strategy.
Coordinate with the business office about digital asks, including membership campaigns.
Hire and oversee the Observer’s digital intern.
Manage the Observer’s homepage.
Coordinate with editors to direct the website redesign.
Occasional editing as needed, including copy editing.
You must be a mission-oriented professional with an ability to work quickly and independently.
Excellent writing and editing skills, and 3 years minimum experience working in a digital news environment.
Knowledge and passion for all things Texas, especially news and politics (or a willingness to become a student of the state).
Familiarity with WordPress or other content management systems and social media, particularly Twitter.
