Now we’re announcing a Deputy Managing Editor position ideal for a digital-first editor with strong editing chops, management skills, and a global perspective.
Do you have at least 7 years years of journalism and editing experience? Are you able to work in the GMT time zone? You are a reliable multi-tasker who can juggle working with reporters and editors covering diverse topics in different timezones, while also offering critical and strategic views on how we should shape future coverage. You are able to step in to make key editorial decisions on deadline and offer advice to other editors or reporters on how to create the most compelling content. You like planning ahead, and envisioning how we can tell stories in creative ways to keep our readers engaged, are digitally savvy and always looking for new ways to reach your audience.

What you’ll do here
If you’ve read this far, we know that you want to know more. As the deputy managing editor, you’ll be responsible for daily interactions with reporters in Europe, helping them to develop story ideas and prioritize coverage. You’ll also deputize for the managing editor, and be the main decision maker on news stories and newsletters in the morning hours. You’ll coordinate with other teams, help develop news strategy and ensure that associate editors are getting the support they need.
Your first year will look a little bit like this…
In your first 90 days, you’ll get to know our network of staff reporters and associate editors, supporting them to produce timely, ground-breaking content. You will help shape delivery of our free and paywalled content across platforms..
After your first year, you’ll have helped to develop coverage plans for select major events and issues, worked with Devex staff around the world to determine coverage priorities, edited everything from breaking news to in-depth series, mentored your reporters and freelancers to make the best of their work, and helped determine news team priorities.
Here are the indicators that this could be a good role for you:
At least 7 years of work experience as a journalist/editor
Strong editing skills and experience
Excellent English writing skills, with the ability to write engaging, compelling, conversational copy
Digital media comes naturally to you from your experience
Confident leading a newsroom and making decisions under time pressure
Good knowledge of media law
Experience mentoring new reporters
An undergraduate degree
You can work GMT hours
Besides the basics, here’s what we’d love to see:
You haven’t just heard of the World Bank and Gates Foundation; you know what they do and how they work
Understanding and interest in development and/or humanitarian issues
Experience working with a high-quality media brand
Experience working across both news and features
