The Wisconsin State Journal is seeking a full-time Copy Editor for our universal night copy desk. Candidates must be able, under deadline pressure, to sharply edit stories, write engaging headlines, ensure the highest standards are kept for all areas of news production and coordinate with our company’s Design Center on daily and weekly production-related items. Three to five years’ experience at a daily newspaper is preferred, but versatility and a drive to excel go a long way. We’re looking for the right candidate to begin on or about Feb. 1.
In addition to a high degree of enthusiasm for the field of journalism, the ideal applicant needs to have basic knowledge of libel law and AP Style, above-average ability in spelling and grammar, a broad knowledge of national and international news, and the ability to do excellent work under deadline pressure. While the position is almost entirely focused on news, having a good knowledge of sports is a plus.
Typical hours for this position are 4:30 to midnight, but hours may vary. Days of the week will vary, too, and will include weekends and holidays; however, strong efforts are made to accommodate scheduling requests. This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
