Regional Investigations Editor, based in Raleigh or Charlotte.
Location: Charlotte or Raleigh, NC
The regional investigations editor will lead a cross-site team of investigative/data reporters and will help support broader investigative and accountability work produced by nine McClatchy newsrooms in NC, SC, Ga. and Miss.
This editor must be a strong coach, collaborator and communicator, able to inspire reporters, editors and visual journalists to identify an important, compelling story and go get it. S/he will have a demonstrated commitment to fairness and accuracy, in fact and in tone, and a strong grounding in journalism ethics.This editor must have the desire and the skill to help reporters build audience engagement around compelling public service journalism.
The ideal editor for this role will have strong writing, editing, social media and reader engagement skills. This editor will have the authority to use those talents to shape our journalism in every aspect — story conception, distribution strategy and promotion — to maximize our reach and impact.
Our McClatchy news teams are deeply committed to First Amendment values in our journalism and to holding leaders and institutions accountable. The investigations editor must be passionate about watchdog journalism and ensuring that government institutions conduct business in the open.
The regional investigations editor will manage a team of reporters based in Charlotte and Raleigh, NC, and will work with editors across McClatchy’s Southeast region to advise and guide our high-impact reporting throughout the editorial process.
The regional investigations editor reports to the Southeast regional editor.
Minimum five years full-time editing experience; preferably focused on investigative and accountability journalism.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent news experience.
