Edutopia, the influential publisher of videos and stories about what works in education, is seeking an ambitious journalist for a 12-month long paid fellowship. The candidate will possess a commitment to diversity and inclusion for students of color, and an ability to identify compelling stories about how schools are serving historically marginalized communities.
This is an opportunity to join a passionate editorial team writing and reporting about transformative, positive change in pre-K to 12 education. The position is a hands-on, integrated role that provides real-time training and experience in reporting, research, writing, social media, and video and multimedia production, while learning the ins and outs of the preK-12 education beat.
The fellow will work alongside our remote team as they research and craft new story ideas, plan the editorial calendar, line up crucial interviews with education influencers, produce stories on deadline, or report on new educational trends from the field. The fellowship is part of Edutopia’s commitment to developing journalists of color in education media.
Over the course of the fellowship, the fellow will try their hand at writing and producing content in multiple formats, including social media posts, longer reported stories, and video scripts, for example, as time and circumstances allow.
The position reports to our senior editor. Candidates of color and those from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
Expected start date is January 2021.
A minimum of bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field; master’s degree preferred;
Strong writing chops in a variety of formats—short and long form;
Confidence and ease with interviewing sources;
Comfort with research and tracking down sources;
Ability to multi-task and work with staff across departments;
Creativity and a tireless enthusiasm for pitching new stories;
Interest in K-12 education;
Knack for writing smart social media posts and sniffing out relevant news and newsmakers online; and
Willingness to learn and take on new challenges, large and small.
To apply: Submit a resume, cover letter, and three clips of work by October 31, 2020. The cover letter should include information that demonstrates your ability to identify compelling stories about how schools are serving historically marginalized communities.
