Experienced Editor to Work with Young People
The Community Reporting Alliance is looking to hire a part time editor in Fergsuon, MO. to re-launch a youth-led local newspaper in print and online.
Successful candidate will be a journalism pro who enjoys young people and is willing to bring patience and humor to help motivate and create a community newspaper.
The 8-12 page editions publish every other month, but can grow in size and frequency with increased student interest and community support.
The lead editor sets up a simple website, oversees layout, recruits student reporters and adult mentors, connects with the local library to provide meeting space and access to computers, and contracts with a commercial printer. The lead editor, with help from the volunteer mentors, works with the young people ages 15-18 to be the writers, photographers, graphic designers and also helps them learn to sell advertising and subscriptions.
Editorial teams meet for one session a week and students usually do work (writing and reporting; design) at other times. Volunteer editorial mentors help scheduling interviews and editing throughout the week.
The Community Reporting Alliance pays a small stipend ($500 per month) to the lead editor, pays for the printing of the newspaper and pays a small stipend to the students who write stories and turn them in on time.
