MedShadow Foundation is seeking an experienced health writer for our nonprofit health website. As our staff writer, you will be expected to be or quickly become an expert in drug and supplement safety along with evidence-based alternative care. You must have a demonstrated ability to understand and critically analyze medical research studies, and to be able to convey that information clearly and concisely to our layperson readership. Though our content needs are subject to change, the staff writer will be expected to pen six feature-length (1,000-plus words) stories per month plus updating existing stories as new research breaks, one to two engagement pieces per week, and any other writing needs that arise.
You will work with the founder to create an editorial calendar and develop article ideas. You will be responsible for researching, interviewing, writing, and posting of compelling and timely articles and engagement pieces. You’ll work closely with the marketing manager to coordinate topics and to help create unique content packages across channels (social media, eMail, and the MedShadow weekly newsletter).
Ideate, research and write on-brand content for MedShadow
Implement and maintain systems to streamline, track, and clarify the editorial process from the pitching to publishing
Handle the production of stories in WordPress, including the selection and cropping of photos, SEO optimization, outbound links, and scheduling posts.
Craft stories based on monthly trends and weekly keyword updates from the Marketing Director
Work closely with the marketing manager to roll out unique content packages across channels (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and the MedShadow newsletter)
Engage with MedShadow Medical Advisory Board
Respond to comments and mail from website visitors. messaging board and on social media.
Schedule and update the MedShadow content calendar
A personal commitment to the MedShadow mission and goals and a strong interest in the health field, drug safety, and alternative care is key
Experience analyzing medical studies and communicating medical concepts to the layperson
Sharp editing and proofreading skills
3-5+ years experience at a digital health or social service publication, nonprofit preferred
Experience with WordPress CMS preferred
Basic understanding of marketing principles and application, especially SEO
Work outside of MedShadow is allowed, but not with any pharmaceutical manufacturer or medical device manufacturer
