Local journalism is critical to a thriving democracy. The Connecticut Mirror (CT Mirror) is a local journalism success story. And we have ambitious growth goals.
We are creating our first-ever Leadership Gifts Officer position to advance our mission of informing the public about policy, holding government accountable, and amplifying diverse voices and perspectives.
CT Mirror is a nonprofit, non-partisan, online news organization covering public policy, government, and politics in Connecticut. In our first ten years we became the most trusted source for news about public policy in the state.
We are looking for an innovative and passionate Leadership Gifts Officer who will deepen the impact of our journalism by generating significantly new philanthropic support from high-capacity individual donors.
Our goals include:
- Expanding the breadth of our reporting by adding an Investigative unit, an Economic Development and Justice beat, a Fairfield County bureau, and a Neighborhoods and Communities focus.
- Expanding the platforms for delivering our reporting:
- Growing our Steady Habits podcast.
- Establishing greater multi-media capability.
- Building a branded events series.
- Deepening reader engagement through an online “Public Square.”
- Providing more opportunities for young, aspiring journalists.
- Other ideas that we can’t even imagine yet but that will be necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape!
If you join us you will generate the new funding CT Mirror needs to achieve these goals. How you do that will be largely up to you. Big picture, we’re thinking you will:
- Create a strategic development plan for doubling annual major individual giving by the end of 2022.
- Identify, prospect, cultivate, solicit, and steward high-capacity individual donors.
- Collaborate with:
- The Publisher who will participate in many major donor meetings.
- The Editor and news staff to become familiar with their work and to understand upcoming newsroom initiatives and innovations.
- Board members to leverage their networks to launch prospect and donor relationships.
- The corporate sponsorship consultant to cultivate senior corporate decision-makers as potential individual donors.
- The grants manager who will write grant proposals for family foundation prospects.
- Developing and executing support materials for donor solicitation and stewardship such as:
- Small, intimate fundraising gatherings, as necessary.
- Talking points to brief the Publisher, Executive Editor, or board members prior to donor meetings they attend.
- Updates for donors prior to in-person meetings.
- Written donor proposals that showcase funding opportunities that align with prospects’ interests and CT Mirror’s mission and vision.
- Prompt, creative and engaging recognition of major gifts.
- We will look to you to blaze your own path to achieving our major donor goals.
We’re interested in candidates who have:
- A passion for great journalism that covers policy, government, and politics.
- Meaningful development experience, with a strong preference for a candidate who has:
- Initiated new individual donor relationships that led to gifts of $25,000 or more.
- Built a successful development program from scratch.
- Strong written and verbal storytelling skills in general and the ability to evangelize about the importance of local news to a thriving democracy and strong communities in particular.
- An engaging presence and excellent interpersonal, networking, and relationship-building skills.
