The Ithaca Voice is looking for a full-time Education and Public Health reporter to cover local news in the City of Ithaca, New York, and the surrounding area.

The Ithaca Voice is a nonprofit digital news organization with a mission to improve civic and political understanding in Ithaca and Tompkins County by publishing and sustaining in-depth, educational, rigorous, timely and ethical journalism that all residents can access free of charge online.

We are hiring a reporter who will primarily concentrate on the educational institutions in Tompkins County with a strong focus on the Ithaca City School District. A qualified candidate will be comfortable covering regular public meetings, requesting records and documents and analyzing budgets — all with the goal of providing parents and taxpayers with an accurate, in-depth picture of what is happening within the district and what it might mean for them. 

Along with a strong work ethic and commitment to free, local journalism, the Voice is looking for a self-motivated, curious reporter with a knack for creating a network of sources and building a beat from the ground up. 

What we’re looking for:

We are looking to hire a reporter with a strong traditional reporting skill set, who is familiar with AP style, dedicated to accurate and timely reporting, has knowledge of and genuine interest in the Ithaca and Tompkins County community and:

Experience

Experience in journalism, particularly as a news reporter, is required. Experience designing and building a beat will be crucial to this position. 

A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is preferred, but not required.
