School News Network, an education news site operated by Kent ISD and covering public schools in Kent County, Michigan, is seeking an experienced part-time reporter to help tell the many stories of education happening in our communities every day.
Our professional reporters offer a window into schools – a behind-the-scenes look at the myriad ways the investment in public education is helping the community’s children grow, learn and achieve. We specialize in advocacy journalism, shedding a light on the value of public education as a cornerstone in a thriving democracy.
Any member of our reporting team must know how to juggle stories, cover a beat and meet regular deadlines and a monthly story quota. A journalism degree is strongly preferred (held by all but one of our team). Our specialty is in-the-classroom coverage, using student voice to elevate stories and illustrate how learning is taking place. Our reporters have strong observational and interviewing skills and must have the ability to tackle important education issues and present them in understandable, compelling ways.
The ideal candidate will have strong photography and multimedia skills and must be adept in use of social media for news gathering and audience engagement.
School News Network offers competitive compensation.
