Associate Professor in Journalism


The Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, in the College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Minnesota announces the opening of a non-tenure track contract faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor in Fall 2020 (August 31, 2020). The School seeks a new faculty hire who will be a thought-leader for the school in the areas of investigative reporting and media ethics.

Applicants must have a professional degree in journalism or related field, a minimum of seven years of professional experience in the professional journalism field, and evidence of a body of creative activity evidencing state, regional and/or national recognition (e.g., awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors; Pulitzer Prize; Inland Press Association/America’s Newspapers, RTDNA, ONA, and SPJ) appropriate for the appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. 

About the Job

A successful candidate will be responsible for teaching classes for the journalism school (including in-depth reporting and media ethics), conducting research and/or creative activities including reporting projects and professional trainings in their area of expertise, partnering with local media organizations to train students in long-form, in-depth and ethical investigative reporting, working closely with the Minnesota Journalism Center to develop and participate in outreach activities, mentoring student journalists who work for student publications such as the Minnesota Daily, and serving as an ambassador for the School and the professional community.

The candidate will also be expected to lead the school’s initiatives in investigative reporting, including data-driven projects, produce creative activities to advance the field of training students and professionals in investigative reporting techniques, and participate in the School’s undergraduate programs through teaching and advising as well as  serving on School and collegiate level committees. Resources available for investigative reporting including the Charnley Professorship that provides datasets and funds available for the “Charnley projects class,” supporting open records requests, software and research technology, and partnerships with local data journalists, media outlets, and social science colleagues in the School. Colleagues in the journalism school with reporting, media design, multimedia editing, photojournalism, and producing experience are available to support programmatic leadership. The School has existing strengths and partnerships in health and science journalism with Institute on the Environment, and School of Public Health. Journalism faculty actively collaborate with faculty and staff in the Center for the Study of Political Psychology, the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law, and the Minnesota Journalism Center. 

Candidates will be evaluated according to a) professional in-depth reporting experience and overall quality of their professional preparation and creative work, b) relevance of their professional work to the School’s academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and d) strength of recommendations.
