Old-school, hard-hitting print journalism is not dead. It is alive and well at The Gallup Independent, an 11,000-circulation afternoon daily in the heart of Indian Country in northwest New Mexico.
We have an opening for a sports editor on our four-person copy desk. Due to COVID-19, our newsroom is currently operating part-time, so this position starts part-time with a focus primarily on reporting duties. Since sports are currently limited due to health guidelines, this may include some general assignment reporting at first. If/when we return to a full-time schedule, this position would transition to a full-time sports editor.
Successful applicant is familiar with InDesign, AP Style and Apple computers. The sports editor manages two reporters and reports on local sporting and recreation events (high school basketball and rodeo are king). Job duties include copy editing, building sports pages using local copy and AP wire, and incorporating sports calendars and scoreboards.
Hours vary and will include weekends and nights. The ideal candidate should be able to work as a member of a team but also able to develop stories and work independently. Some travel is required, so candidates should have a dependable mode of transportation and vehicle insurance. Benefits include mileage, paid vacation, sick leave and paid holidays. Health, dental and vision insurance are available. Applicants who live in the Southwest are given priority.
