Reporter (Part-Time)

The Coast News is seeking an ambitious reporter to join our newsroom covering North County San Diego. We're looking for a curious journalist who enjoys asking questions, uncovering important stories and making a difference through local reporting.

This position covers a wide range of beats, including city government, education, public safety, courts, business, community events and human-interest features. Every week brings new opportunities to break news, develop enterprise stories and tell the stories that matter most to our communities.

What You'll Do

• Cover city council, school board and other public meetings
• Develop original news, enterprise and feature stories
• Report breaking news with accuracy and urgency
• Conduct interviews and build relationships with local sources
• Take compelling photos, write accurate captions and capture occasional short-form video from the field
• Produce clean, AP-style copy on deadline
• Help share and promote original reporting across our website and social media platforms

You'll report stories that appear in our weekly newspaper, website and social media channels, helping deliver trusted local journalism wherever our readers are.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field preferred
• Professional newsroom experience is preferred, but we're happy to hear from early-career journalists and talented writers with strong reporting skills
• Excellent writing, interviewing and research abilities
• Strong news judgment and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines
• Photography experience is a plus
• Experience creating short-form video for social media is a plus
• Familiarity with AP style, WordPress and digital publishing is a plus

Position Details

This position is available as part-time.

Part-time: Approximately 20–30 hours per week (flexible based on coverage needs)

Compensation: Competitive and based on experience.

Full-time employees are eligible for health insurance, paid vacation, sick leave and other company benefits. Additional writing opportunities, including sponsored content and special publications, may also be available for qualified writers.
