The National Press Club Journalism Institute is hiring a Learning Manager to coordinate its professional development work. The Institute’s programs create lasting learning that powers journalism in the public interest; this role will be at the center of planning and providing those experiences. The Learning Manager will also oversee day-to-day operations of the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library and the learning that occurs there.
Program responsibilities include:
Execute a professional development strategy that meets the organization’s goals and mission, with Institute leadership;
Generate training ideas that extend the Institute’s reach and build loyalty;
Collaborate with the Executive Director and other staff on curriculum design;
Identify promising potential faculty, recruit and coach them, provide feedback;
Build a database of potential speakers and teachers that reflects the diverse constituents media represents;
Coordinate approximately two dozen programs annually on a wide range of topics, including evening events, daylong workshops and conferences;
Craft messages that convey the value of professional development programs to the target audiences and promote programs on all appropriate platforms;
Provide teaching support for classes as needed;
Oversee on-site execution of programming, including logistics, coordination and communication, from booking rooms, A/V and banquet needs to recruiting volunteers to providing learning materials and arranging coverage to handling check-in and -out;
Track budget and registration to ensure programs meet expectations and requirements for grantmakers;
Track measurement tools to evaluate outcomes;
Collect and contribute program narratives for grant applications and development initiatives;
Maintain annual training calendar and course descriptions;
Assess future learning needs in consultation with members, staff, board, journalists, journalism students and citizens
Library responsibilities include:
Coordinate library orientation and other related training;
Coordinate and manage library exhibits and space;
Answer or refer research questions and provide general library support as needed;
Manage office administration, handling mail intake, conference room bookings, and equipment check-out;
Audit and improve systems for managing library and office environment;
The successful candidate will have experience:
coordinating programs and events;
organizing projects collaboratively;
using strong analytical and communication skills in writing and in person;
reporting or editing in a newsroom within the last five years.
