Job Overview

WTOP reporters are responsible for writing, producing and voicing content to be used on WTOP's broadcast and digital platforms, including social media. WTOP reporters are a vital part of the team that makes WTOP the leading provider of local, timely and relevant news for the Washington, DC metro region.

Job Responsibilities
·Create on-air packages, write articles for web and post to social media on the top news of the day, as assigned
·Help deliver news with a sense of urgency 24/7

Key Responsibilities
·Produce on-air and online news reports on 2-3 topics/events per shift
·Enterprise and develop stories for daily broadcasts. Collaborate with the news director to choose stories to pursue and broadcast considering audience needs
·Research and gather interviews/sound for stories. Attend and cover community events
·Write clear, accurate and interesting stories. Break down complicated and involved stories so they are easy to understand
·Maintain standards of accuracy and fairness in news coverage
·Actively pursue news tips that come in via email, phone call or other official sources
·Monitor local/national news outlets, social media and email to make sure WTOP is on top of the most relevant and breaking news stories of the day
·Must be able to present stories live from the scene of a news event or the newsroom, or record stories for later use
·Keep abreast of new developments in stories being covered by WTOP
·Provide newsroom leadership and contribute to overall team effort
·Maintain an active social media presence
·Comply with the moral code of the journalism profession
·Travel daily to the scene of news stories to gather and compile information into the proper form for broadcast
·Complete assignments according to established deadlines
·Maintain extensive community contacts
·Communicate frequently throughout the day on progress of assignments and work collaboratively with others in the newsroom
·Attend editorial and strategic meetings, as needed
·Complete other duties as requested

·Degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field
·2-3 years professional reporting experience in the broadcast news industry (radio or television)
·Be a great storyteller
·Strong writing, interviewing and audio production skills required
·Photography and videography skills, preferred
·Must be knowledgeable of local/national/international issues, newsmakers and current events, and be able to present stories in a way that is accurate, clear, complete and relevant to news consumers
·Ability to handle a variety of news reporting assignments, including breaking news
·Knowledge of DC-area court systems and rules for covering the courts
·Stay up-to-date on the latest technology to conduct high-quality interviews
·Ability to file remotely on a smartphone and/or utilize Skype, RingCentral, etc. from the field
·Must be able to think quickly, maintain performance under extreme pressure and respond to breaking news in an effective manner
·Work closely and respectfully with editors, news directors, assistant editors, fellow reporters and digital staff
·Highly developed public speaking and interpersonal skills along with exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
·Ability to work weekdays and weekends, as needed. Must be flexible to work any assigned shift including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours
·Report to work on time and work established schedule/hours
·Act in a professional manner when representing the station. Project an appropriate and professional appearance and demeanor
·Strong leadership and communication skills
·Knowledge of Adobe Audition, Burli, and Wide Orbit, preferred
·Ability to work in compliance with company policies and procedures
·Ability to function well in a team environment

·Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record and be insurable. Applicant's driving record will be checked.
