The Digital News Director oversees news content and operations across all of WTOP's digital platforms (website, app, smart speakers, podcasts, social media, video & other emerging mediums) to help make WTOP the leading provider of local, national and international news that matters for consumers in the Washington, D.C. metro region.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
*3-5 years experience leading a digital news team
*Degree in journalism, communications or related field (preferred)
*Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate a diverse workforce covered by a collective bargaining agreement that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
*Excellent news judgment and knowledge of current events/pop-culture
*Ability to think critically and adeptly while managing in a fast-paced, highly-charged and aggressive news environment; work effectively under pressure, multitask, prioritize, organize and meet deadlines.
*Be part of a team to develop new and innovative content for web and audio products
*Experience creating and operating within established budgets
*Experience negotiating and executing vendor contracts
*Understanding of social media and its relationship with news consumers
*Flexibility in work schedule. Ability to work established schedule and other hours, as needed.
*Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management, clients, news sources and the general public
*Project appropriate company image with respect to dress and demeanor
*High level of initiative required and the ability to work independently
*Work in compliance with company policies and procedures
*Knowledge of the local radio industry
Essential Job Functions:
*Lead and grow team of 20 full-time and part-time employees. Responsibilities include daily oversight of staff, hiring, training, schedules, leadership development and annual reviews.
*Direct and manage all aspects of WTOP's multidisciplinary digital news content offerings
*Establish and maintain editorial direction of WTOP's digital news content. Evaluate and ensure digital news content is in line with WTOP's mission statement to deliver news that matters to consumers in the Washington, D.C. area.
*Set WTOP's digital news priorities and goals. Ensure they are implemented and met by WTOP staff across platforms.
*Provide effective leadership to the organization
*Ensure WTOP's digital news content is optimized on all distribution platforms (WTOP.com, the WTOP app, social media, search engines, third-party aggregators such as Apple News, podcasts and smart speakers). *Establish SOPs, training and processes within team to ensure quality control and mission are met across digital platforms
*Work with Broadcast News Directors to ensure cohesion of news product across audio and digital platforms
*Create and operate within the established digital budget, including managing relationships/agreements with external digital partners/vendors
*Evaluate, recommend and implement new distribution platforms for WTOP's digital news content
*Set digital news growth goals and strategy for reaching goals. Ensure team, processes and technology are in place to meet those goals.
*Evaluate and report on monthly/quarterly/annual analytics measuring WTOP's growth across digital platforms
*Oversee long-term digital projects on the editorial and web tech sides, such as website redesigns and app updates
*Leverage innovation, best practices and digital trends to increase WTOP's penetration in the D.C. news market
*Evaluate and establish partnerships with local news providers in the D.C. market to expand news content offerings
*Collaborate with sales team to optimize digital revenue
*Collaborate with marketing department to create and execute digital branding campaigns. Execute on paid social media and targeting campaigns/strategies.
*Work with internal Web Development Team to set priorities, and implement website design and CMS workflow updates. Identify and integrate new technology into workflow processes.
*Collaborate with content leaders across Hubbard Radio and other successful local news outlets to leverage innovation and best practices among markets. Work with HBI on corporate-sponsored projects and priorities.
