The Insider Reporter will produce and edit content for publications related to The News & Observer’s coverage of politics and the North Carolina General Assembly, including the Insider State Government News Service, The News & Observer, Under the Dome and newsobserver.com. The Insider Reporter will work at the legislature during session. This responsibility will require editing, rewriting, reporting, coordinating with N&O and Insider reporters and monitoring web sites across the state and in Washington, D.C. It will also involve attending committee meetings and monitoring floor sessions and proposed legislation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. To produce Insider news items and to help prepare a daily roundup of top news from around the state.
2. To write stories related to state politics for The Insider and The News & Observer.
3. To monitor legislative actions, news publications, political blogs, press releases, email notices and agency websites in order to produce live social media content for Insider and newsobserver.com readers utilizing mobile devices.
5. To assist with the production of news podcasts and subscriber events featuring informational discussion, and to assist with other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism or related field. Qualified candidates will have demonstrated exceptional reporting, writing or editing skills in a professional setting, and be comfortable working in multiple software environments simultaneously. Knowledge of the legislative process is desired. Must be familiar with AP style and able to work independently to produce clean copy under deadline.
