Southern Rhode Island Newspapers, based in Wakefield, is seeking a full-time page designer and copy editor, to assist in the pagination of our several weekly community news-oriented publications.
The successful candidate will ensure our papers' layouts highlight our journalism with an appealing visual style, while also maintaining a high standard of accuracy and readability. The position will require a sharp eye for detail – to catch mistakes before they go to press; and knowledge of basic principles of print design. Some proficiency with InDesign is required, as is familiarity with AP Style. Prior newspaper design experience is preferred, but recent college graduates with visual design and journalism training are encouraged to apply as well.
The position's responsibilities will include designing section fronts and inside news pages, writing headlines, editing locally-produced copy and aiding in the error-checking process. The position will be involved in the layout of several newspapers serving different communities, and will work closely with both news and production staff – so the candidate must have organizational skills and flexibility, and the ability to work on tight deadlines.
Although the position will be primarily responsible for the print publication, experience with website editing is a plus.
To apply, candidates should send a resume, cover letter, and portfolio or work samples to Rhode Island Suburban Newspapers Executive Editor Seth Bromley, at email@example.com. No phone calls, please.
