22nd Century Media, a rapidly growing company that publishes 15 community newspapers, has an immediate opening in its southwest suburban office for an assistant editor with a passion and talent for community news.
The assistant editor is responsible for collaborating with two editors to develop award-winning, weekly hyperlocal publications. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to break into the industry and is interested in working in an entrepreneurial, creative and fast-paced environment. This position includes a comprehensive benefits program.
- Helping to plan a weekly newspaper consisting of news, life and arts, and sports sections;
- Reporting on and photographing local events and meetings;
- Compiling regular content items, like police reports, a community calendar, obituaries and more; and
- Working well with a team of editors and freelancers.
The ideal candidate for this position will be detail-oriented, a team player, energetic and creative. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required. Should be proficient in Microsoft Suite and Adobe InCopy. Copy-editing skills with a vast knowledge of AP Style and grammar are a must. Previous experience working in a newsroom is preferred not required.
A four-year journalism degree from an accredited college or university is required.
