We are seeking a copy editor and designer who has an eagle eye for grammar and loves to be up on the latest news. The Design Desk Chief/Copy Editor is the final person to put the paper to bed at night. In this role, you'll edit stories, review headlines and page layouts, help determine our local coverage and national and global wire pages, pitch in design ideas, and work closely with our design desk. You'll also get to design certain feature stories for the paper and special sections. 

The Idaho Press is one of the largest newspapers in the state, covering Ada and Canyon counties. We publish six days a week and encompass four local weekly newspapers. 

The Design Desk Chief/Copy Editor must be organized and attentive to details. This role juggles daily tasks alongside long-term projects. This position plays a crucial role in pulling together the pieces that make a daily newspaper successful, while also having time to step back and think creatively about big-picture designs and goals. 

The position is 40 hours per week, 2:30-10:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. 

Overview of Job Responsibilities
This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the newspaper and assembling the graphic content of the newspaper, pagination. Copy editors/designers edit stories, write headlines, make content decisions, compose pages, process photos, and, at certain times, manage staff by making editorial decisions. Copy editors/designers must understand the basics of a good news story, know the AP stylebook and possess good grammar knowledge. 

You must be able to meet deadlines under pressure; present accurate news reports; communicate clearly; update the website; and handle material in a rapid and accurate manner.

An essential function of this position is that the employee can handle stress and be congenial with other employees and customers at all times. Having a positive attitude and being helpful. 

Minimum Qualifications
Successful applicants must meet the following qualifications:
• Bachelor or other four-year degree in graphics arts or journalism or a related field
• Work experience in several computer programs, including InDesign, Photoshop, Blox CMS

Preferred Qualifications
Additional preferred skills and qualifications include:
• Fluency in written and spoken Spanish
• College internships
• Newspaper, design and web experience
