“The fun for me in collaboration is … working with other people just makes you smarter, that's proven.” --- Lin-Manuel Miranda
Best quality, fast growing b-to-b title in Chicago seeks a new team member for our Chicago office who wants to get smarter with us. Meatingplace is the award-winning, premier business information resource for the meat processing industry. Our brand encompasses a news operation that is the industry’s No. 1 go-to every day, a gorgeous and well-read monthly magazine that defies publishing trends and is thicker than ever, a popular social media presence and a growing multimedia channel. Collaboration is the key to our success.
Not sure you want to cover “meat”? For a journalist, this industry has it all: Fourth-generation family-owned companies, multinational corporations, lots of Washington action (political, regulatory, legislative, even executive), global trade trends, sustainability, lawsuits, feeding the planet, macroeconomics, microbiology, religion, heroes, anti-heroes and bad apples. We’re never bored.
Our open position is Managing Editor of the monthly magazine. This individual is the keeper of the deadlines, tracking copy and art incoming for each issue and following each element through our electronic production process right to the final read before the pages go to the printer. The ME is Meatingplace’s primary liaison with the art, production and ad sales departments. The ME leads the team in issue planning and assignments (scheduling rather than content), photo choices, and making sure all the elements of a story are pulled together by deadline.
This individual will also: Work on daily news at least two days a week; write about five analytical pieces each year for the magazine as well as contribute a varying number of short items; attend conferences (about 5/year, most domestic but occasionally international); travel as needed to report stories; record audio or shoot video as needed; be ready to jump on public speaking opportunities.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who geeks out on great journalism. It’s a reporter whose day is made when he/she gets a quote from that elusive source, a writer who can paint a picture in words (and do it on deadline), a storyteller who can deploy content multi-dimensionally, a utility team player who elevates everyone’s game, and most of all, a dedicated learner who’s willing to tackle new challenges and new skills.
Meatingplace is published by MTG Media Group, a b-to-b publishing company focused on food and hospitality titles. Our offices are near the North/Clybourn Red Line stop and not far from the Clybourn Metra station on the UP/N line.
The ideal applicant will have 5 years’ experience, interest in and working knowledge of business concepts, demonstrable reporting and writing chops, experience working with a team. Must have a current passport and be available to travel about 20% of the time. Compensation commensurate with experience.
