Whitman College has great stories to tell. And we’re looking for an experienced magazine editor to help us tell them. The senior writer and magazine editor will oversee production of our three-times-a-year alumni magazine, telling the stories of the college, our students and alumni. Whitman is a thriving liberal arts college in Walla Walla, Washington. Our 17,000 alumni are loyal and passionate Whitties who are using their education to change the world.
Redesigned for the May 2019 issue, Whitman Magazine is putting a fresh face forward to tell stories that support the college’s strategic goals. These initiatives include building a diverse and welcoming community that is inclusive of students from all backgrounds, races, cultures and socioeconomic statuses; celebrating our unique location in Walla Walla and the opportunities it brings; and talking about the way our faculty are innovating the curriculum to push our students further.
Our senior writer and magazine editor will use the strategic lens of these college priorities to produce an engaging, visually stunning and intellectually rigorous magazine that supports our enrollment, fundraising and alumni engagement goals.
This person will manage our online newsroom, with both staff and student writers, and help the Content Team prioritize articles, as well as identify the best avenues for storytelling. Salary range and benefits
Our starting salary for this position is targeted around $56,000 annually. The position is full time and works 12 months per year. The position is eligible for full benefits including retirement savings and dependent college tuition benefits, and will earn 4 weeks of vacation per year.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Minimum requirements : Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, or related field and five years public relations writing or journalism experience, or any combination of experience that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job. Experience editing a college magazine strongly preferred. Skills that contribute to the diversity of the college are appreciated.
