ASSISTANT METRO EDITOR
The Houston Chronicle seeks an Assistant Metro Editor who can inspire a team of reporters to produce a smart mix of news and enterprise that serves readers when they want it on the platforms where they insist on it.
This editor will lead a team of reporters who juggle breaking news, longer-term enterprise and investigative work that helps readers understand the fourth largest city in America. We want someone who is dynamic, aggressive and collaborative, someone who has the confidence to challenge conventional thinking and the urgency to think digital first. This editor must help with resetting the newsroom clock to a new rhythm, making sure we post stories earlier in the day and planning for our best work to be ready when our readers are ready for it.
This person will also be adept at utilizing metrics to hone our coverage and social media strategies to maximize audience engagement.
This editor will help ensure our journalism reflects the diversity of the communities we cover and the essence of what makes our city special, infuriating and fun. We want an editor who can make every story better, someone who can enliven and sharpen the writing, deepen the reporting. This editor will help reporters think beyond the routine and procedural. We want stories that break ground and introduce our readers to interesting people they didn’t know or places they didn’t know existed.
This position reports to the Senior Editor for Metro.
