Indianapolis is a city of nearly 900,000. It is the economic, government and cultural center of Indiana. It is home to an award-winning Children's Museum, one of the most highly regarded airports in the US, a burgeoning chef-driven dining scene, two major professional sports franchises and the Indianapolis 500.

It is also a city that has suffered through four straight years of increased homicides and a city that struggles to provide basic infrastructure in its neighborhoods. In short, Indianapolis is a city that provides a good quality of life for many, but also has the types of challenges that present an opportunity for a journalist looking to make a difference.

The IndyStar is looking for the right reporter to do just that. We are seeking a reporter with the savvy to pore over a city budget and the sense of justice to question the fairness of city spending. Yes this is a City Hall reporting position, but our intent is to focus less on council meetings and more on how the actions - and inactions - of those in power affect the quality of life for those in the community. It is also our intent for stories to originate not just from news conferences or meeting agendsa, but by speaking with neighborhood associations, business owners, community advocates and others whose concerns might not otherwise come to light.

Position requirements:

-Watchdog reporting instincts, skills and experience (the ideal candidate will be comfortable asking both the tough questions and filing a public records act requests.

-Ability to take sometimes complicated subject matter and make it accessible and clear

-Desire to write about issues through the experiences of those affected

-Enthusiasm for identifying, maintaining and nurturing an audience through sophisticated use of analytics

-Passion for multi-platform, multi-media journalism

-Sophisticated understanding of how to use social media to break news and promote your work
